Its hard to say since I'm not sure what you mean by 'officially.' Giant squid are described accurately in ancient Greek mythology - so that would be the first documentation that is still in existance. Descriptions of giant squid washing up on shores and sightings by sea captains are recorded throughout history. The first taxonomic description was recorded by Jappetus Steenstrup in 1857, who named the genus Architeuthis.
