This has haunted me for some time--I simply cannot remember what movie this belongs to. The scene is this: People are gathered around a dinner table, the air is formal, perhaps a restaurant or formal dining room, a young (about 25-30 yrs old) woman stoically begains eating a whole flower, I believe a large tulip or an orchid. The eating of the flower seems to symbolizes an outward display of her descent into madness, and also in some sense, rebellion from her oppressive husband and societal role. The characters are asian, and I believe it was set during the 1920's or 30's. The timeframe of the film was 1986-1994. I think it was a "good" movie. Driving me crazy--anyone remember?

I disagree with the Joy luck club answer. "It was the Last Emperor" The scene takes place during the banquet when the emperor celebrates his alliance with Japan (WWII). His wife is addicted to opium and is sinking into despair.

It is a great movie!

If it was a poppy flower, she may have been eating it to get the Opium effect. If so, it may have been either Joy Luck Club, which includes a high end concubine in the palace committing suicide by eating poppies because she knows she has to die to save her children. It could also be The Last Emeror (I think) where one Chinese woman and one Japanese woman are eating poppy flowers together and their true feelings of hatred (conqueror and conquered) come out under the effects of the drug.
