I grew up in the midwest and was moved by my company to Arizona..I knew I didn't want to live there after a short period of time, so I bought the Places Rate Almanac, to get me started on where to pick to live next (they rate about 300 cities in the United States by all sorts of criteria). I found an online "Places Rated Almanac" which lists some of the same info and links: http://www2.lib.udel.edu/subj/godc/resguide/places.htm

Not all of the items I was interested in were in the Places Rated Almanac, but the majority of the info was there to help me narrow down my search to four cities...I applied for jobs I was qualified for at each of the four cities, got job interviews at two of the cities, and moved to the first city that I got a job at (they moved me across the country to North Carolina) ...I've been here 21 years now.

Good luck!

This might be a good place to start, once you narrow your search to specific states you can go those state's sites and read up on them some more.
