I just wanted to mention that NO children under age ONE, preferably TWO just to be safe, should eat honey. It can cause what is known as infant botulism. My mother did not know this. She let my brother (I was not yet born at the time) eat some. He died, but back then, 1977, the docs werent sure if it was the honey or perhaps sudden infact death syndrome. I wanted to tell ya that just incase you were asking for a little one.
Also, I cant remember if anyone brought it up, but essential oils are marvelous! Pine is a decongestant, and so is eucalyptus. There are so many. So far, since I am new to it I have only used the above two. And, there are anti-viral essential oils such as tea tree (eucalyptus is one too). by putting it into a hot bath or in a candle diffuser, a person breathes it in. Not only can you use the decongestant ones, but the antiviral ones can help kill it in the air before it spreads and will even help the sick person get over it because it can enter the bloodstream. ALWAYS look to see what ones are safe to use based on any health conditions such as, diabetes, epilepsy low/hgh blood pressure and which ones AND the dosages for kids.

By severe, I wonder if you mean he is coughing HARD, or LONG or UNPRODUCTIVELY.
Elecampane and Mullein are good expectorants. They make the mucous less sticky and work as vasoconstrictors, so he can cough something up and breath easier. Brew 1/4 cup elecampane roots in 4 or 5 cups water, simmer for 10 minutes, strain and sip as needed. Steep 1 tablespoon mullein leaf in 1 to 1-1/2 cups just-boiled water for 6-7 minutes. Either tea can be sweetened with honey.
Balm of Gilead buds, simmered like the Elecampane, is pleasant and soothing and thins mucous.
Adding a nervine like Skullcap may be helpful to a cough brought on by constant tickle in the throat.
If the cough is hard, with soreness in the lower rib area, Pleurisy root is best. Brew it like the Elecampane. Traditional Medicinals makes a tea called Breathe Easy that contains pleurisy root in combination with other tasty and helpful herbs. Available at most health food stores.
An old time cough remedy is to steep several slices of onion in about 1/4 pound of honey overnight. Take by teaspoonful as needed. This is an expectorant, antispasmodic and mild antibacterial.
