i just saw the finale for season two of dr. who, and sadly, the end of rose as a companion. from reading on the internet, i have surmised that it was her decision to leave the show. can anyone tell me why she left? i am only in season two, but can anyone give me their opinion on the new companion, without spoiling the plot? thanks

After the completion of the first series of Doctor Who, the British media regularly released conflicting reports about how long Piper would be staying with the programme. In March 2006, Piper claimed that she would continue on Doctor Who into its third season in 2007; however, on May 10, 2006 Piper was reported to be considering quitting the series, although she did express an interest in playing a female version of The Doctor in the future (possibly related to a proposed Doctor Who spin-off series about Rose which was later dropped). On June 15, 2006, when it was announced by the BBC that she was to depart in the final episode of the second series, "Doomsday" and it has also been revealed that her decision to leave was taken a year previously, but it remained a secret until recently.

Martha Jones, to be played by Freema Agyeman, will be the next companion of the Tenth Doctor, and will make her debut in Series 3, to be broadcast in the UK in spring 2007.

The introduction of Martha as the next companion after Billie Piper's Rose Tyler was announced by the BBC in a 5 July 2006 press release. The character is a 23-year-old medical student. Like Rose, Martha will have family members who are seen in the programme: Adjoa Andoh has been cast as her mother, Francine, with Trevor Laird as her father Clive, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as her sister Tish and Reggie Yates as her brother, Leo. She will not have an ex-boyfriend, but writer Russell T. Davies notes that she will not be a lesbian, as had been rumoured in some quarters. Indeed, it has been reported that Martha will have a crush on the Doctor, which becomes clear in a bedroom scene. BBC One Controller Peter Fincham revealed that Martha meets the Doctor when the Royal Hope Hospital, where she is working, is transported to the moon.

No further details are available about Martha's character, save that she will not be appearing in the 2006 Christmas special. An article in The Times speculates that, since Agyeman has martial arts skills, she may have "a more physical approach" to the role.

Agyeman previously played Adeola, a minor character who was killed in the Series 2 episode Army of Ghosts. The resemblance between the characters may have an on-screen explanation, according to Agyeman. Davies claimed in a Newsround interview that the resemblance will be subtly touched on.

I was hoping the season finale was just for us to think that Rose was leaving, but it sounds like you have more info than I have. I hope it's not true. I just got used to thus new DR.

Sorry I don't know anything about the new companion. I just wanted to comment because I love Dr Who.

billie piper was a big pop star at one point before Who... with her renewed popularity, she wanted to get back into her music career I think.

The best thing was they did a great job of wrapping everything up with her, Mickey, and her family. On the old series, exiting companions didn't get near as good of a farewell ep/ scene (which was why I enjoyed School Reunion because of Sarah Jane finally getting a good goodbye scene).
