We had conflicting traditions when we married. My family always opened their gifts Christmas Eve. His family didn't open their gifts until after they had eaten Christmas dinner!!!!
So -- we each open one gift on Christmas Eve. It's our choice which gift we want to open.

We open the rest of the gifts on Christmas morning, after breakfast. (except for the stockings which are opened as soon as our eyes are open)

BUT: Santa has always left one special gift for each person, on the tree. Presents at the base of the tree are opened Christmas morning, presents hidden in the branches of the tree are not opened until after dinner. These are usually funny little presents - sort of a post-dinner joke and the something you usually spend more time trying to find than you do for the regular present, because they can't be expensive but they must be special.

So that's our compromise.

Merry Christmas to you, whenever you open your gifts.

When I was a child, I was allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, the rest on Christmas Morning. Now, with all the meshed families involved, some years it is both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (like this year), some years it is one or the other - depends on everyone's work schedules and travel schedules. Actually, this year we had Christmas yesterday with my business partner, have nothing today, but then family Christmas tomorrow. I don't think there is a "why" answer.

Have a very Merry Christmas!

We open one present each on Christmas Eve, and the rest on Christmas day. The reason is because my eldest daughter can't wait to open presents, and never could. So to keep peace and harmony for all the children and grandchildren, that has become our tradition. The perk is we get to sleep in on Christmas day this way too. :)

Christmas day. I'm not sure why. I think it's funner-waiting and also it may be a test from our parents to see if we have enough patience? I don't know. We've just always opened Christmas day.
