You really only have three companies to choose from these days.

Western Digital
Seagate
Hitachi

Western Digital makes exellent drives, they have always designed drives which are quiet, fast, and cheap. I have noticed that recently more of their drives fail faster, but mainly due to the manufacturing process. Usually Western Digitals fail slowly and typically you have time to recover data if they fail.

Seagate makes exellent drives as well, they are fast, quiet, and a little more expensive than Western Digital drives. Seagate was used in a lot of OEM computers and I have found that when they fail, they just fail. Not usually much of a warning. Keep in mind if you want to buy a Quantum or Maxtor drive... Maxtor had bought Quantum, and Seagate bought Maxtor. So Seagate makes them all.

Hitachi makes mediocre drives, mainly they are best known for their laptop hard drives. They acquired IBM Data Storage, so the IBM Deskstar drives are now creatures of Hitachi. (If anyone rememberes Deskstars were dubbed "Deathstars" because of their high failure rates.)

Usually these other no name manufacturers are rip offs of these three major brands listed above.

I'd honestly say, it would mainly be between Seagate and Western Digital. For high end performance gaming computers etc, Western Digital makes the best drives (Raptors) but they are expensive and small..(a 73 gb drive is almost 200 dollars or more.).

If you are looking for something moderate, Seagate makes great drives that won't break the bank, and still meet all of your needs, and a lot of their drives carry a 5 year warranty. (You'll find some of their drives at like the 160GB range are only in the 60-80 dollar range and carry a 5 year warranty and have some of the best ratings.)

I hope this helps!

That's a tough question. I have always bought Maxtor because they had the best prices with always having rebates. But, I have also bought Western Digital drives because they have a great warranty and performance. I have probably been through 20+ hard drives in the past 10 years and not one has died on me. I have only been through many hard drives because I am a digital pack rat. I currently have a total of 1 terabyte. 2 WD Raptor 36GB drives, 1 WD 500GB drive, 1 Maxtor 200GB drive and 1 Seagate 200GB drive.

As for the best hard drive company, I think they are all good. As for the best performing, it varies depending on the generation. This year, I would have to say Western Digital. I just love their Raptor drives...10,000rpm.
