Most anything you buy from a brand you have actually heard of is good. Try HP, Samsung, LG, etc.. You shouldn't have to pay more then 50 or 60 bucks tops depending on what extras it has (like lightscribe for labeling discs directly to the dvd using a laser or the ability to burn dual layer dvds) I'd recommend going to tigerdirect.com and checking out the dvd burners they sell. It's also a good site because user's leave feedback and reviews on how they liked the product. Good luck, I hope this helps you

I am not sure if there is such thing as the "best drive" because all drives perform alike and perform the same functions, which is to burn CD and DVD.

But, if you want to throw in price, performance and compatibility, I have two NEC 16X DVD/RW drive that I bought from Newegg.com for $30. I think they are down to $28 these days. I have probably burned over 300 DVD's on these drivers and they work great. 100% compatibility with all DVD players.

Unlike, some off brands (i.e. iomagic) that I have bought, they would not work in some of my DVD players.

Don't waste your money on lightscribe. And you should not be spending more than $40 on a DVD-RW drive.
