I agree. I think what he means is that a teacher isn't meant to take away dreams or fantasy or imagination...but rather to build up our knowledge base so reality can meet our dreams. Even if it doesn't, dreams are what fuel the fire and keep us moving forward.
If you've ever read his books, they are full of imagination - and yet all very deep, profound and relevant. You could even call them timeless.

It's the only hope, really. Kids love their jungles & no one is going to oust them. But they will need some math & english & history & science to get into college & get hired!! Irrigate the deserts!

Agreed. They DO try to take down the bright minds and they often don't do enough to irrigate those dry deserts.
One teacher once told me that a teacher is like a chain--the chain is only as strong as it's weakest link--( ie, teacher is only as good as how they fare with their weakest student.)
