Why are cowhides so special in runescape? what are they used for and am i able to make some money off of them?

With the right crafting level you can make leather and then leather armor or studded leather armor if you have enough smithing to make studs - which you can sell for about 5k

Before the Grand Exchange, the only way you could sell anything for a good price was to go to the correct bank on world 1 or 2 with a good quantity. Look for someone standing there saying "buying cowhides 120ea" or whatever. Al Kahrid was the bank where people used to trade cowhides. Now that the Grand Exchange is available (Nov 2007), it is by far the best way to go. You get the same price if you got 10 or 10000 cowhides. Prices are very stable. It's located on the northwest side of Varok. I guarantee, no one will offer you a better deal than the exchange.

People who make money using the crafting skill buy them to level up quickly.

They turn them into either soft or hard leather at the tanner in al-karid, and then with a needle and thread they can make all sorts of leather items.

The best place to sell them is to people in the al-karid bank, and they buy them for around 90-110gp each.

Probably because people take them to a certain person, make it into leather ,a nd use it to raise their crafting level.

As far as I know, they aren't. Lol. You can craft them into ranging armor, mainly.
