i've heard that the plan is to get men on mars, then start warming up the planet so that the ice under the surface melts so oceans can form and to fill the atmosphere with carbon dioxide so that plant life can survive so that they can start producing oxygen so that we could eventually live there.
well here is my idea; fly a ship containing large amounts of hydrogen gas, and another ship with oxygen gas. when released and mixed and shot with a laser beam from earth a chemical reaction should then occur. resulting in three crucial things. heat, water, and carbon dioxide. only i'm a bit confused where the carbon comes from.
Then, using electricity, split the water back into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas and repeat the process. I'm assuming it would be a net loss of energy, but is there a such thing as a loss of energy? not according to einstein. the normal concept of losing energy is just it being converted into heat. But that is exactly what we want to have on mars.

Hmm-m. Seems like you have put together a big plan here.

I am a little confused about who the "we" is in your idea, however.
you mention it in the last sentence where you say< "...we want to have on Mars."

Given the amount of hydrogen and oxygen needed to create an atmosphere on Mars, we would need to extinguish all life on Earth for several thousands of years.

Then, have you considered how we would ever get that gigantic balloon of gas up into space and on its way to Mars? That would take all of the energy contained in say 1/3 of the planet Earth.

Heaven forbid anyone should light a cigarette, or strike a match anywhere in the vicinity. And, what about electrical storms with lightning discharges - big huge sparks shooting out of the sky?
Hydrogen goes "KA-Boom" and the project is zappo for good.

I think you would be better off starting a colony somewhere in Africa.

If we Terraform (Yes, that's what it's called) Mars, then we stop the process of evolution and no Martian life could exist!! And if we did do this, there could be dire consequences! Do you know about the American revolution? But let's just say we would be England and the colonists would be America! We would lose manypeople and suffer a big hit in our Economy and Population. And we would stop all chance of life forming on mars! But if we restored it's atmosphere and liquid source, MARTIAN life could form. The Martians would be grateful for us helping them come to life and would aid us (were talking millions of years in the future) in an intergalactic war if we didn't mess up by trying to take control of them.

Let me see if I have you right.

You want me to trust in your idea even when you don't know where carbon dioxide comes from, you confuse Einstein's theorys with the laws of thermodynamics and you use electricity without saying where you get it from (not to mention that you just state that we send "large amounts" of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas to Mars without any idea of the amounts required or how to get them there or how to combine them when they get there. Laser shot indeed).

Sorry, but a less expensive way then yours would be to mine the ice rings of Saturn or even the smaller ones of Jupiter to get the necessary water.

How would you go about this? I don't know, but then, I don't claim to know or put it out as a good idea (I have an idea how, but it is a bit complicated and not 100% sure of the math involved).

Anyway, thanks for your ideas, it is better than anything on the Jokes and Riddles section.

I saw that same show on the science channel. they spoke about burning fossile fuel on mars to produce CO2 on mars and heat up the planet. They predicted this process would take about 50 years to raise the planet 10 degrees. I think your idea may aid theirs in that there are many better ways to generate heat than burning coal.
Our waste, the pollutions put into our atmosphere, would actually be very beneficial on mars. increasing the CO2 there would in turn increase the greenhouse effect on mars and the planet would begin to increase temperature on its own. Similar to the movie Total Recall, it is beleived that mars has frozen oceans beneath it's poles. It's a good idea bro, keep it up.

you are goin to need a very bit ship full of hydrogen and oxygen to even make a bath tub full of water

HAH! Thats A LOT easier said than done. You know what it takes to change a planet? Its a science fiction idea, cant actually be done on todays technology.

Man"s future will end somtime in the next 350 years if he is lucky enough to get that old.

so....basically you're admitting (for all of mankind...thanks) that this planet is on its way down.

so....now you want to go to Mars and exploit all the resources like has been done on this planet.

I say......you go first and we (rest of mankind's pioneers) will come after you perish trying to change Mars. Rest assured, I, personally, will make sure you are memorialized...........
