like all the other posters said, it's a PAIN to cancel AOL, especially over the phone. just remember to be consistently persistent, and decline any offers they give you.
my caveat is that, that was many years ago. recently though, the today show featured this guy who actually recorded his entire phone conversation with an AOL rep who gave him a hard time before finally cancelling his account. youtube has similar videos as well from other dissatisfied AOL users.
you would think that after bad publicity like that, the company would wise up. hopefully they did. so.. good luck!

Oh boy !!!
I feel so fortunate, not to have been sucked in to AOL,,
it seems that nobody here has had a good experience, and yes it would appear that it's very easy to sign up for AOL services but come the day to cancel, then be prepared for a lengthy battle with them, I uninstalled my copy of AOL from my computer the first chance I had, I would suggest that you all do the same.
I am very happy with my copy of MSN Messenger and Yahoo,
thats all one need's,,, resign AOL to the Bin where it belongs

My first words to you are: good luck, the ease in ending an AOL subscription appears to be inversely proportional to that of beginning one... My experience and that of many others in this regard has been awful. For what are obvious reasons AOL doesn't make it easy for you to quit their service. For example, there's no "Cancel My AOL Service" option on the "Help" menu. Probably too many people would use it! my only advice to you would be very persisent, ignore their sales pitch tell them politely you've heard enough but just want to cancel . . . good luck!

Its a royal pain, But go to the main AOL site and find your account. Click Cancel acount, it will give you a list of ways to do this. We had to call long distance and verify all information, before they would cancel the account.

With great difficulty, AOHell are notorious for bulying and blackmailing their customers so that they stay with them, it's known as FUD, (Fear, Uncertanty, Denial), if your contract has ended, you can phone them up and have them cancel it, and if they try to stop you, just say you work for Trading Standards, if your contract is still in effect, you could attempt to cancel it if they're "failing to provide a service", as a customer, the service should be meeting your level of expectations, not theirs, though this could entail legal intervention.

You will have a hard job with them trying to cancel like I did. They will keep on persisting that you keep to them and they will also add on extra charges for using their broadband. Be careful with them, they are not easy to get rid of.
