This is a common issue with laptops because laptop resources are strained when it comes to video on two different displays. Some video cards can do it and some can't. It sounds like yours is one that can't, but I will have you check some settings first.

1) The easy solution is to press FN+ F key (one with two monitors) to turn your laptop screen off and only have an image on your second monitor. This will allocate all resources to your secondary monitor.

2) Are you trying to view video on both monitors at the same time? Another way is to switch from clone desktop to extended desktop in display settings. This will expand your desktop and create two separate desktops. This will allow your computer to allocate resources as needed for video. This will be found under Control Panel > Display > Settings. If you select your second monitor in the drop down, then you can click the box extended desktop and click Apply.

3) If you go to Control Panel > Display > Settings and Advanced, you will typically have an ATI or Nvidia tab. Here you will often find a setting to configure your video playback. There will sometimes be a setting to enable video on both screens. I can't remember what is called, something like Home Theater Mode.

4) The other option, which I would not recommend is to lower your Hardware Acceleration. This will often allow you to play video on both screens at the same time. This setting is typically in the advanced settings. On my computer, it's under Troubleshoot tab.
