There are a lot of different oppinions on what Emo really is. It is a sub genre of punk. it draws influences from many different styles of punk and indie music, and in my experience indie music gets called emo a lot, but its really its own style.
Emo, in today, is a generic term that someone would use to label something that might have emotional song lyrics and slower musical arangement, usually with acoustic guitars. In my oppinion is a retarded, trendy term used by people who dont know their music.

Okay, i'd say all the answers given are wrong, except Roland's. His was the closest.
People classify emo as being somewhat like punk. You know, having the black hair, maybe some colorful extensions, listens to hard music....and that's not even emo.
Emo is short for emotional, not punk. To be emo, you'd have to be really emotional, get strong feelings about a song or something.
You can't just listen to punk music and call yourself punk.
I've been called emo because i wear punk clothes and check shoes and it's pretty annoying becuase i'm not emo.

Most probably ENO. Brian Eno formally of Roxy Music. Produced albums for Bowie, Talking Heads, U2 etc.

emo isnt about what colors you wear or if you are straightedge or cut yourself those are just sterotypes to that term. emo is just short for emotional and when it refers to music it normally is stuff like hawthorne heights and stuff like that. but really all music is emotional. the person writing it had some type of emotion going through their head while writing it. stupidest term ever.

stay away from emo music, if you listen to it you will be percieved as a fool and a wuss, and some people will beat you up.
needless to say, it's a bad choice for a lifestyle. especially if there are real punks or metalheads around you.
