You are writing a courageous essay.
Two topics you might explore: American financial irresponsibility. Personal financial responsibility is not a topic that the U.S government, particularly the President and U.S. Congress, is taking a leadership role on. People are placing their futures in precarious danger and it is essentially being sanctioned by the U.S. government which regulates who can borrow money and rules related to such borrowing. In its own house, the U.S. Government is accumulating unprecedented amounts of debt (The National Debt) without any plan to ever pay a penny of it back. Meanwhile foreign nations are lending us money to cover interest payments.
The other topic to explore is the self-destructive nature of politics and debate and the lack of willingness for more non-partisan vision for the future. I am particularly concerned by a vocal minority that wants to make religion the centerpiece of U.S. Government policy. If we look at how backward and destructive the nature of some of countries are where religion is key in civic and political life, it should serve as a warning. Yet, nobody wants to push back on this topic. Religion is private and personal and it should be kept out of the political realm.

As much as I hope not, you can make a good case (and write a good essay) pointing out the parallels. Over-expansion of the "empire" territorially, self-indulgent culture paralleling the Dionyssian age of Rome. And even Rome's superior "democratic" form of government didn't prevent its fall. Keep your fingers crossed . . .

It sounds absurd, but it seems that the country is moving in a somewhat concerning direction. It seems that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer... racism, prejudice, animosity, mistrust, social classes all seem to be evident. Popular culture, media, mental health, materialism, justice system, education system, morals... where is this all going? I don't know fall like Rome, but something.

yes, we are a spiritually bankrupt nation ... materialism fueled by paganism and fear which is hidden by a false sense of security form the empty promises of the horrible churches and temples.
