Critics of iner racial adoption argue that it's impossible for someone of one culture to teach another culture because you have to live it in order to absorb it. The proponants of argue that children are hurt most by being left in the system to wait where the chances plummet that they will ever get adopted the older they get. A disproportionate number of adults who grow up in care are incarcerated, unemployed, do not finished high school and receive public assistance.

I personally think that somethin I read sums it up: When people say 'love is all it takes', they seem to overlook the impact race has on our society. Somehow when it's a case of adoption, race suddenly doesn't seem to matter anymore.

I think that it's fine. Some people suggest if you're going to do that, to adopt another child of the same race at some point as well just so the children can relate to each other. I'd say go for it. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!

Your succinct summary of the issues surrounding inner-racial adoption identifies core difference of opinions relating to this topic. An adopted child of a different race than their adoptive parents will certain not be able to truly experience their heritage/culture. Although many adoptive parents go to great pains to expose their adoptive child to the history/culture of the adopted child. It is true that being exposed and experiencing history/culture/heritage are not the same and do not have the same overall impact for the child. But what is the alternative, to leave the child without a loving family and being left in the system? It appears to me that there really isn't a question as it relates to what is best for the child.

It would make perfect sense to put a child with parents of the same race, but it is impractical. It is hard enough to find quality parents willing to step up and open their hearts to the sometimes forgotten children of our society.

I feel that it is society that makes it hard for everyone involved in something like this. If a person wants to adopt and are good people who will love the child regardless of race then so be it. However the adoptive parents as well as the agency need to take every step possible to teach the child about their heritage. Adoption can be a way for everyone to learn about the other.

You don't say what country you are from. But if you happen to be from the U.S.A., here's my thoughts. I am amazed at why it is so important to teach 'another culture' to children? Can't they just be raised as Americans? Yes, it can be taught...and there isn't anything wrong with it....but as long as a child gets good love and care...what difference does it make? On the other hand let me say this. I do find it insulting to children in the American adoption system to be left there, while Americans go to other countries and adopt.

I may be guilty of wishful thinking, but when I see a mixed family I feel great about it. I can't tell if the family is mixed by adoption or by marriage but it doesn't really matter.

If race is going to become less important in our world then we have to start somewhere. Mixed race adoption is a great way to say "we love children regardless of their race" and the children can go on to be great leaders with respect to an equal world.

I think the people who are afraid of it actually further the division and racism in the world.
