Really good answers, but DO NOT USE VEGETABLE OIL if you can avoid it. With use, the vegetable oil will leave a "gummy" residue, and be hard to remove.

Use a product such as "Spry" or "Crisco" (or lard which is the best "seasoner for iron). Place in a 250 degree oven for at least 30 minutes, let sit until cool. Wipe excess shortening from the skillet and it should be ready for use. As was previously recommended, to clean, merely wipe clean, use water to rinse and dry thoroughy to prevent rust. (It should not rust is properly seasoned.)

The other answere are good, this is only my way of doing it.

The best way to clean the frypan is to fill it with plain water and heat to boiling on the stove. Pour out water, put empty pan back on hot burner. After dry wipe out with paper towel coated with good guality vegetable oil.

Never say never.

The purpose of seasoning a cast iron pan is to prepare it for the period of time you won't be washing it with soap.

Before your first use and from time to time, you can wash it with soap and water. You would then season it. In between seasonings, use hot water and a brush. Season it by making it hot on the stove or in the oven, then applying oil to all surfaces.

You don't really ever "clean" a cast iron pan. You can run hot water on it and scrape off the chunky bits, but soaping it up isnt good. To season it, heat it up HOT and rub vegetable oil on it - kinda like when you moisturize your face. Then let it cool.

Half fill frypan with a good oil then place in oven at 375 for four hours.. Allow to cool, get rid of excess oil then wipe remaining oil into pores. NEVER WASH WITH SOAP! Simply wipe out and every so often reseda son it after washing with soap and scrubber.

Er you're kinda supposed to oil it BEFORE you put it in the oven. Use vegatble shortening and apply it in a thin thin coat.

Best way is to heat up the pan and rub used motor oil on it. 10w 40 seems to work the best. Gives the food a nice flavor too.
