In nowaday's society, the only time to give is on a birthday or Christmas. The rest of the time, we're supposed to get it all for ourselves.
Jesus says it's supposed to be all the time, give everything you've got whenever you can, because this earth doesn't matter, it's all about getting into the Kingdom of God.
So it depends which philosophy you yourself are following here.
