The term Santa Klaus come from the dutch and german pronunciations of
Sankt Nicklaus and Sinterklaas which were phonetically altered by New Yorkers in the early 1800's. His feast day in Europe is widely celebrated early in December and he is known as the protector of children. He was a real clergyman and was known for giving gifts to children amongst othe rrhings.
Immigrants from Europe continued to celebrate his feast day in that manner when they came to the US and our traditional Christmas celebration eventually merged with his day. (short answer)
