By this I mean can you have both in one car at the same time?

You could conceivably do this, although weight might be an issue.

There are some auto's on the market now that are "manual" automatic.( I don't remember which) You have the the option to let the trans shift itself or you can shift the automatic trans manually. There is also a race application that is a manual auto shift.

I had a 1967 GTO 400 dual gate transmission . you could shift like auto or manual . no actual clutch involved. But it was FAST!!

There are cars out that can do that (well, it's a semi-manual). Can't currently remember the makes or models.
