We all know that spiders prey upon flies. But is there a fly or other flying insect that is an active predator of spiders? If there is, some background information would be good.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Tough the previous posts contained info. regarding wasps the question clearly stated flies.
Some larvae of flies in the Sarcophagidae family (flesh flies) are known to predate on spider egg sacs. Some of the predatory flies will prey on spiders, Asilidae (Robber flies) for example will prey on adult spiders (as long as they don't get caught in a web) http://bugguide.net/node/view/70366 . Then there are the Acroceridae (small-headed flies) larvae of this family burrow into spiders and devour them alive !

Spider-eating bug found in quarry

Episyron gallicum seal their prey in a tunnel with a wasp egg laid on it.
A Mediterranean spider-eating wasp has been found in Britain for the first time and it is breeding in a quarry.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds worked with site owners Lafarge Aggregates in Sandy, Bedfordshire, to create a habitat for rare insects.

The creature was found after the firm agreed to fund a site survey to see if the restoration work was successful.

The wasp called episyron gallicum hunts for prey on the ground and paralyses victims such as spiders with its sting.

Then the wasp seals the spider in a tunnel with an egg laid on it.

When the larva hatches, it uses the arachnid as a source of fresh food.

The wasp is normally a Mediterranean species and the nearest it has been to Britain before now is central France.
