i know they know more than me,but i don't understand some of the plays they send in.Like..3rd and 7 and they run the ball up the middle.Another one that amazes me,the team is 1 yard or less from a touchdown,Why don't they just hand the ball off to some fullback up the middle like allstott or some big guy,but no...they give it to some little running back who dances around back there and he loses yardage or he's so small, they hit him at the goal line and he fumbles.

This is fun and interesting question!

My credentials are that I have coached football for over 25 years at various levels. The stupidity or brilliance of a certain play is due to two things: calling the right play at the right time. This is not as easy as it sounds or would appear.

From the high school level up through college and deeply into the NFL, every play is analysed and studied using 10-30 factors. This is true for both offensive and defensive plays. The PRECISE game conditions for each play (personnel on the field, down, field placement, field conditions, clock, etc.) are tracked across the course of each game during the entire season. This analysis produces a "scouting report" that gives a pretty complete profile of a team. Going into the game, the anaylsis of game films results in a fairly accurate chart of probabilities or tendencies of your opponent. The trained coaching mind can spot an opponent's tendencies - on either side of the ball - and call the correct plan.

The real time game situation adds another dimension to calling plays as sometimes your star players choke or your second team players play brilliantly. Field conditions such as rain or wind change a team's probable play calling as well. Remember that just as the offense calls a play, so does the defense (formation, coverages, blitzs, stunts).

Knowing the character and style of the opposing Head Coach plays into the big calls for the big plays when the game is on the line. Is the head coach conservative or a gambler? Loves the big play or the low risk play?

When you see a "stupid" play like a 3rd and 7 and they run the ball up the middle, what happened is that the offensive coordinator expected the defense to be in a hard pass rush/linebacker drop back kind of defense where a quick run through the line will net 12-15 yards. The O-Coordinator blew the call in other words.

On the goal line, getting the last 3 yards up the middle is one of the most difficult plays in football. This is because the big linemen are taught to shut down all the running space where a back could go by cutting across open gaps. This technique gives the back no place to run, literally, and allows the linebackers, free, and strong safeties to push the ball backwards with a hard tackle.

It is a cat and mouse game between the defensive coordinator and the offensive coordinator.

Brilliant coaches are able to take the facts from the scouting reports, real-time game information, and player performance within the game to call brilliant play that make it look easy.

In general, a great defense will always stop a great offense. There is an old coaching saying that is Offense wins games, Defense wins championships.

Based on winning against good competition over time I would agree with you except for Les Miles. I am a die hard LSU fan and I am not bashing here but Miles has now gone through Saban's boys. It looks as if Miles has done a very good job recruiting with the exception of linebackers. Unless something changes in a hurry the Tigers will be hurting at this position for 2008. I say let's see what Miles does this year and if he does well then I would put him in my Top 5. The person I would replace Miles with is Mack Brown and I cannot stand the guy but he delivers. He usually has the Longhorns in the thick of things. I am sure some folks will mention Bobby Bowden but FSU has been on a decline for several years now but back in his heyday he was great. Same goes for Joe Pa. The up and coming coach is Saban. I was there at the games when he rebuilt the Tigers into a very competitive team. He will get it done at Bama. As a side note I am not sold on LSU dominating OSU. The Buckeyes have a lot to prove and they unlike the current LSU coaching staff have been to the 'big dance.' Case in point, look at how well Michigan played. I didn't give them a snowball's chance in h*ll of winning that game against Florida. For LSU the difference maker will be a healthy Dorsey if he can get back to 100%..

Football is a game where you have to think on your feet all the time and you have to think of strategy and what the other coach is thinking. I agree the one yard line touchdown runningback is a horrible idea but you got know that this sport is somewhat theartics whatever makes the crowd happy espically in the nfl.

They don't. The other coach calls a better play.
