After living in Hawaii for 8 years, the side of the mountain facing the prevailing winds is the windward side. The islands have an Easterly prevailing trade wind which changes to Southerly during the winter (or Kona) season. For this reason, Kanehoe, HI is located on the windward (east) side of the island of Oahu, and Honolulu, HI is located on the leeward (west) side of the same island.

The Windward side is more popular. But I think STOSS is the correct name for any mountain face that faces weathering actions more.
