Last time i was at phillip island they all seemed to be asleep in the trees. With Chlamydia a national Koala disaster it wont be long before there are very few koalas in the wild. Also the loss of habitat due to urban spread is destroying a specialised and limited food source. So i'd estimate about 16 are left... that is the ones not sent to japan, the usa, china, singapore, new zealand ( hey a straight swap for sheep).....

ANNIE GUEST: Today is Save the Koala Day but academics warn it could be too late, at least for the southeast Queensland population, which they say is declining by more than 1,000 and up to 3,000 koalas yearly – that's from a population of 10,000.

Has anyone ever counted them? Who knows?
The Koala Bear is very cute - but how do you count
them, they live in the wild and in captivity.

Hi,
There are only 6 koalas in Australia.
But they move so fast that it seems like more.

besides the ones in zoos in other country's, that leaves ALL of them left in Australia...
