Maple is a computer algebra system. There are several brands, Maple, Mathematica, Derive, Macsyma, probably others. My favourite is Maple. It has a big learning curve at the front (Derive is probably more user friendly) but once you can make it walk and talk it is pretty powerful.

Maple is a computer algebra software package and I think it's a miracle: you can differentiate and integrate functions by using it, you can also plot the functions, do matrix calculations, statistics and a lot more and it's very easy to use. You can even define a function and compute it's 100th derivative in just a second. Or you can invert 10 by 10 matrices. And the most beautiful aspect of it is that it can work with symbolic (i.e. non-numerical) objects, e.g. you can write a general matrix full of symbols like a,b and c and it can find its inverse matrix. The same holds for functions. And if the answer is Pi for instance, then it says Pi and not 3.1415..., just the way you do when you work on problems. It can also handle complex numbers.
