It gives a chance for the imagination to fly... In my opinion, imagination is far more important than knowledge...
Also, many of those fairy tales have important-- but sometimes corny-- messages in them.
However, I bet there are some cases when people grow up thinking life should be a fairy tale... They are VERY disappointed when life doesn't turn out the way it does in one of those books... Happily ever after hardly ever happens.

It's fun, expands the imaginaton, makes you feel there is something to get excited about. The key is knowing it's not real. That's when the the harm can come in when you can't separate reality from fantasy. Then divisions in people occur between who believes what. Just look at religion...people like to believe it because it gives them "hope", it comforts them, gives them a (false) sense of security; but then causes wars, hatred, devisiveness, etc.

Aha, but how do we KNOW they don't exist?
How do you prove non-existance?
Its possible those things are just out of the wavelength of most of the adults. And anyways, have you not noiced that KNOW is probably one of the most overrated words in any language... One moment you think you know something, the next - something happens and all your world turns upside down.
So happy holiday and a haunted weekend!
It seems you need it!

Well, the main reason is because a child is gullible so they more they believe, the more hope they have... this can help enhance a childs imagination and ideas... this is why everyone teaches these to their children...
But the REAL reason is: To sell a bunch of junk that looks outrageous...

The same reason we believe in God. It helps explain things and control the masses. It teaches life lessons and makes them interesting enough to remember. And it teaches us as children that there are consequences for behavior good and bad. I think the help.

I find it weird myself too.
We tell our children not to lie and then tell them about Father Christmas like hypochrites. This I believe does more harm than good because you have already sewn the seed of a lie in their earliest years.
A more moralistic way for your children is to never lie to them about anything.

Suit yourself. If you are from Missouri and need to experience it yourself in order to accept it, then so be it. However, the majority of things in life we grow to accept because they work that way time and again. Actually, God works that way too. You can depend on him to work the same way no matter what.

as humans we fell the need to believe in something it helps most ppl feel they are part of something bigger them themselfs, as children go they only know what they are told as to be true, and that prepares them for the believing in things that are not exactly true
