2000 - 2004 was the period when dance music "died" (it went back underground) and rock n roll turned soppy with coldplay, travis, etc etc making "pleasant" guitar music.
It has to be said that HipHop and RnB certainly became the major commercial success of the decade. This is now changing again. 4 years ago every other song on radio1 daytime was a hiphop or rnb song - now its dance - not scouse house tripe either - proper dance that has emerged from the clubs.
You'll find Indie disco/rock n roll has become a major foce again in the last 2 years with the rise of The Killers, return Oasis and of course the ArcticMonkeys.
Hip hop has become forumlaic and now appeals to the "kids with pocket money" group. It will hit back agian in the next few years but its certanily had its peak.

Well if you want to break it down year by year you get...
2000 It was actually all about pop music, Madonna's Music, Britney Spears, Ooops I Did It Again, Geri Halliwell was having a go with Bag It Up, Kylie was Spinning Around, Spice Girl at again Mel C with I Turn to You, with just a whiff of Eminem and Destiny's Child to strat things to come....
2001 still splattered with pop and even pop idols Hear Say, charting along side Simon Cowell's other teen band S Club 7, we couldn't get Kylie out of our heads but Moulin Rouge helped introduce the masses to Christina, Lil Kim, Pink and Missy Elliot all these girls were about to flood the mainstream
2002 Sugababes and Holly Valance were sailing the pop ship the old fashioned way, but the new "reality show" winers were now taking over the charts, Liberty X, Girls Aloud, Will Young and Gareth Gates all getting number ones, Aaliyah, Nelly and Eminem were getting Hip Hop and R n B warmed up and those annoying women had us doing the Ketchup song but at least we got Dirty with Christina
2003, The fake lesbiens Tatu had us up on the dance floor, and teen friendly rock arrived with Busted and Kelly Osbourne, dance music made a bit of fight back with Tomcrafts Loneliness, and Michael Andrews had everybody depressed at Christmas with Mad World.
2004 F*** it Eamon and Frankee were arguing in the charts, Busted, McFly and Kelly were still getting teenagers to try a bit of rock whilist Usher, Nelly, Missy Elliot tried there best to keep r n b real but 3 of A Kind had topped the charts with Babycakes and made it all a bit poppy which meant R n B was back, House music kept the daance scene alive with Lola's Theme and Eric Pryds "work out girl" Call on Me.
2005 Madonna Hung up on us all, and some stroppers called Pussycats were humping our tv screens, The Killers, Kasier Cheifs and Franz Ferdinan kept indie kids happy and Beyonce, Nelly and Eminem still kept on going with a 100 wannabees charting behind them, McFly were the new teens pin up and James Blunt for the housewives, and the world groaned as Shane Ward won X Factor
