The window is shrinking and can be at little as three months

The process usually takes about 1-3 months depending on the day the movie leaves cinemas. On some occasions the DVD might already be available but not yet in stores to be purchased as a release date might have already been scheduled. Generally this takes between 1-3 months because of the choice of which bonus features, edited scenes and interviews to add also because of legal business to be taken care of including copyright. I hope this was very helpful

It depends on how well the movie does and whatever contractual obligations the studios put on the film. Sometimes a Summer movie will come out, do well, and they'll hold the release onto DVD so that it doesn't conflict with other product of theirs. The same is done for release dates in the theatre. For example: MGM releases a movie on June 1st, with medium anticipated box office revenue. The movie turns out to be a blockbluster, so they push back the theatrical release date of other movies of theirs to get as much revenue from both movies, and so that they aren't competing for the same money.

The better the movie the longer it takes. An average movie may be out in 2-3 months. If it's up for an oscar, you might have to wait more than 6 months.
