My personal best is the Toyota Corolla. It is an expensive car to purchase but it does hold it's resale value. I prefer a 5-speed manual and it is recommended, they can be much cheaper on gas.
NIssans are good as well as volkswagens. Many of these little cars will probably double the distance of what your getting with the pathfinder. 4 cyclinder.
They are smaller vehicles and they sit lower on the road...

I'll go along with the Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Beetle TDI.
You should also take a look at the Scion xB. It has close to the same room inside as your Pathfinder. If anything it probably has more rear seat room, most people think it's cute, it's fun to drive and it's only $15,000.

Get a Camry. Test drive one with a 4-cylinder engine to see if that would be enough engine for you. If not, Toyota's V6's get great mileage too. Try to avoid compact cars. Crash tests are beginning to show that small cars don't fare well at all in side impact crashes.

For maximum cute, I'd say a Mini Cooper, Mazda MX-5 Miata, or VW Beetle TDI. All of these are pretty fuel efficient and certainly look cute.
