Sulfanilic acid is plain while diazotized has sulfanilic acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium nitrite and diazo reagent with it. DSA (diazotized sulfanilic acid) is use in the determination of Bilirubin substance found in blood , which is the major bile pigment. Any increase of bilirubin indicates liver dysfunction.

The amino group is replaced by a diazo group which can be used as a good leaving group or a nucleophilic group to make a diazo dye in synthesis.
