being a fireman for the past 15 years here is what we do. first call the fire dept., second shut down the air to the fire, third take an extinguisher marked ABC and shoot short bursts of the agent up in the fire toward the flu. this will cause the agent to be pulled up into the flu where it will smother the fire that is burning on the walls of the flu. it removes the O2 from the fire causing it to be extinguished. after that is done put the fire out completely. you won't be able to build another fire until the flu has been cleaned and inspected by a professional. the heat many times causes the flu to break down and may have to be repaired

When I belong the our volunteer fire department we used what was called a "flare" we recommended that everyone that burned with wood carry them. When you had a chimney fire you opened the stove door, lite one of these and tossed it in the stove, the smoke put the fire out, they never failed.
One other way is to close off all air to the fire or get on the roof and cover the chimney, or drop a cleaner down the chimney. I personally recommend the "flare" bought at any stove store. Closing all air works also.

Put out the fire below, and call the fire department. Hope your chimney isnt on fire now as your awaiting an anwser! My chimney got red hot one time, I was burning pine that time. Pine isnt the best to burn in a stove or a fireplace because of the sap and kreosilt. Now I only burn hard wood like oak and elm.

Call the F.D, and if you have one, shoot a fire extinguisher up the chimney, not down. Sorry if this is a little too late. Try and prevent them by having the chimney professionally cleaned each year.

I have actually put out a roaring chimney fire with just a little water tossed on the fire. It creates steam which puts it out. Took a couple of times to accomplish the job.... But, when it doubt, DON'T TAKE CHANCES... CALL THE FIRE DEPT.

Is it out yet? Or am I to late? Close the flume, it will go out by itself when it has exhausted it's fuel source, fire extinguishers can actually blow the fire and burning embers back into the room. Have your chimney cleaned and all bird nests old dried leaves and as much carbon buildup removed at least once a year.

I've heard that if you throw a road flare into your stove and close down the stove it will put out a chimney fire. You would need an airtight stove for this to work. You may want to ask a fireman before hand.
