It's about real life, which so many other Xmas songs ignore...

The song features two Irish immigrants, lovers or ex-lovers, their youthful hopes all but crushed by alcoholism and drug addiction, reminiscing and bickering on Christmas Eve in New York City. MacColl's melodious singing contrasts with the harsh sound of MacGowan's voice and the lyrics which are sometimes bittersweet, sometimes plain bitter: "Happy Christmas your ****/ I pray God it's our last". The lyric "Sinatra was swinging" suggests an unspecified period after World War II. The title, taken from author J. P. Donleavy's novel A Fairy Tale of New York, was chosen after the song had been written and recorded.

A couple about to split up looking back on their dying relationship. First fondly, thinking about how they first got together at Christmas time and when they started experiencing the first flushes of love!. They then begin thinking of the arguments and where it all went wrong!! This is magnified at Christmas, their ill-fated anniversary and their negativity towards each other increases .
The last verse is full of regret and sorrow, they then finally start talking and realise that they can't live without each other and they are still in love and of course it happens to be Christmas again!!

The Rockettes once moved to Radio city Brazil in the 1880s
and the legend reversed in fortunes. New York became the
romatic skating park of the hopeful young debutantes to be
noticed for films in the early 1900s. Just settling in is the theme
of the truth packagers of their production protecting fairies, and
fairy tale investors. Good entertainors and good production.
