When the PS2 originally came out the first editions had various disk related problems..
As new editions came out improvements have been made. I have owned a PS2 (the old version) and had it for 4 years, I sold it a couple of months ago as I am saving to get a PS3 and I would not recommend anyone to get earlier editions as they always have problems..
If you were to get an old PS2 you will find that it will at somepoint stop reading disks, make screeching noises this is because the laser arm (the thing that balances the ps2 laser) is not level anymore and may need replacing. This is due to it wearing off as of excessive use. There is no guarantee how much an old PS2 has been used.
So what you get with the new slimline, it takes less space, plays the same stuff, looks better, makes less noise, is more reliable as Sony have had 5 years to get it right. And you can pick a new one up for £70 if you look in the right places. Plus don't forget the One year guarantee.

Well bare in mind that you cannot buy an old PS2 brand new any more, but they were the ones that came up with the infamous "Disk read errors" As my one has started to do on the blue PS2 Disks.
I have now got a new slimline PS2 and not had a single problem with it, just bare in mind that it may be a bit more fragile so dont leave it on the floor where it can be trodden on.
I suggest you get a slimline (new) PS2 as they should be the most reliable. The old model is probably going to be second hand, and may well come up with the disk read error after time, (mine took about 3-4 years though!)

I would be surprised if you can still find an old model PS2, but here's what I've seen:
The newer model is less hassle because it is smaller, and you dont have to turn on the power button, and then hit the reset button to get going. Also, the CD tray on my old model is kinda of broken and I need to pull it all the way out, and push it back all the way in, while the new one you just put it right inside. Those are the only differences I know of though.

I suggest the "new" slim model.
My friend owns two (one for him and another for his brother) and he's had them for several years and they have yet to show any signs of malfunction.
Between my family however, we've owned three "old" models and two of which burned out completely (we take good care of our stuff, so it wasn't because we left it on for 8 days straight or anything), and the one we own now currently has constant disc-errors, won't turn off when you hold down the power button for 5 seconds like it should, randomly stops in mid-gameplay, and has several factors like that that really cause me to not want to even attempt to play it, keep in mind this PS2 is rather new, and only a few months old.
So I suggest the new model because it seems more reliable if my friend has two and both work perfectly and he doesn't care for his things all that much, and my PS2 has problems constantly when I take care of it as much as possible.
Hope that helps and good luck.

I have the old one and I haven't experienced any kind of a problem for 6 years or so. However I advise you to buy the new version because even if it is weaker you will be able to fix it quickly and cheaply as some parts of the old version are hard to find. The above happens as Sony prefers the new one and tries to make people to buy it by offering more abilities. Plus the new one occupies less space.. (that's what makes it weaker and more fragile)

The old one. It can't even play gold-layered DVDs without a special program that you have buy seperately. Go with the slim if you're going to buy a PS2. Everything's upgraded, easy to carry around and doesn't take up too much space like the brick the first one is.

Get the slim version,I had to switch mine and i decided to get the slim version. Because when i use to own the old version i had to change it at least three times because it kept on breaking down after having it for a year. So,i got the slim version and i have not had one problem yet and i have had it over a year now.

It depends how you care and handle your system. I've had my old version of the PS2 since it came out and it's perfectly fine. Just like brand new.

the new slimline is better....coz right now...there are very few problems..coz these problems are mainly in the first year the system gets launched..then afterwards when the small mistakes are corrected..there's hardly ever anything that goes wrong unless the normal breakdown of equipment that happens
