Because in hockey, violence is par for the course in the game. When you go to a hockey game, you are expecting big hits, and a couple of fistfights. Without the hits and the violence, "goons" like Tie Domi, Tony Twist, and the others wouldn't have a career. The 10 game suspension for the sucker punch is because it's unsportsmanlike to take a cheap shot at your opponent.

Now on to the NBA. This is a league that is really trying to clean up its image. Look at the dress code they've got going for the players. David Stern's problem is that the NBA has a lot of black players and basketball is a game of the streets. There are still a lot of people in this country who look at that and think and say racist things about how it's just a bunch of black people and that's what they do. David Stern had to send a message to Carmelo Anthony and the other players that the NBA is serious about no fighting. Look at Malice At The Palace, they weren't kidding around there either.

Another reason for the longer suspension can be explained by your question. "The guy in hockey" got ten games and you don't even know who he is. Nobody does, because hockey is becoming increasingly a niche sport, with sagging attendance and revenue. By contrast, the NBA is on the way up internationally, and Carmelo Anthony was one of the young icons of the game. He was the scoring leader. For him to get involved in this fight was doubly unacceptable, both as a civilized man and as a valuable marketing asset for the NBA. He got a heftier suspension then Nate Robertson because he needs to be taught that if you're gonna be a superstar, you absolutely cannot behave like that.

Hockey and basketball are two entirely different sports. Do not compare those situations. There is NO fighting in basketball, however fighting is condoned in hockey. Its part of the game and always has been. Bertuzzi got ten games because it couldn't have been more of a cheap shot. If he had stopped the guy, turned him around, dropped his gloves and hit him, as opposed to knocking him out as he skated down the ice, he only would've gotten 5 minutes. Does a boxer get suspended for punching his opponent? No, because its part of the sport. No punching in basketball.

NHL and NBA is two different leagues with, obviously, two different commissioners. After the brawl between the Pistons and Pacers, David Stern said that they would not take these kind of things 'lightly' any more; to make the NBA look better after the brawl. It falls into the players getting called more easily for technicals. No one is taking any more crap.

In hockey, fights are much more common so this was something that is expected out of players. When they are fighting they get angry and aggressive and it happens. In basketball fighting is not at all tolerated and after the Pistons-Pacers brawl it is not at all tolerated and needs to be stopped now before it is accepted.

They are different sports. There are rarely fights in the NBA and in the NHL fights are more common so if you fight in the NBA you will get suspended longer.
