You have to plant things that will bloom in succession. Each thing has its time to bloom, then it goes by. Nothing blooms all summer. You could opt for things with slightly longer bloom times, like phlox, daylilies, lavender or zinnias.

I'm not sure if they grow in Iowa, but I live in New Hampshire and daylilies are beautiful perennials that will bloom from early summer all the way to early fall. They come in many different colors, so they will be easy to fit in with any landscape you already have.
