Thalassemia is an inherited condition that causes a problem in the production of hemoglobin. This leads to anemia, which is a low red blood cell count.

Thalassemia minor (passed from one parent) usually does not cause long-term problems. Thalassemia major (both parents carry the gene), however, can result in stunted growth, problems in bone development, darkened skin, general growth problems, and death.

Bone Marrow Transplantation in selected patients has “cured’ the disease. The procedure is expensive and still has significant mortality (over 15%) even in a previously well-managed patient and when a 100% matched sibling donor is available. With new understanding, the success rate of Bone Marrow Transplantation is improving over time.

Alternative medicine can only help with symptoms. For instance, oral chelation herbs will help remove the excess iron build up from blood transfusions. Ginseng might help with the fatigue. Anything to help build up the immune system would be a positive.

You might look into a natural product called Cell Food, by Lumina. It is supposed to increase oxygen in the blood. Here's a link to get started: http://www.luminahealth.com/
