If you do not want to get them a gift, then don't get them one - you are under no onbligation to.

You don't have to do anything. But, it is best if you are the better person here. If it is difficult to get them a personal gift then send (or take) them a festive fruit basket or a poinsettia include a nice card with a simple greeting and sign it from all of you. If your spouse is getting them something and something from the children, then just make the 'gesture' gift from you. It's possible that whatever you do will not make them happy if they truly don't like you. But for the sake of family make this small gesture . It's only once a year and you have taken the high road.

I think it depends on the situation. Will you be sharing Christmas with them? Do you get along and are you friendly towards each other? Will they be getting a gift for you? It would be better to give one even if not required than to not give one and wish you had. It doesn't have to be a "biggie". Get something like a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates or cheese/sausage thing.

Christmas is about the spirit of love and giving. why stoop to their level and not buy them a gift.
do something small and use full. give them a cookie basket or candles . have the kids make them something too. like a hand print ornament with their pic's in them.
by showing you are a bigger person and spreading the love and joy of Christmas around you will feel better too and it teaches the kids a good lesson

How about just some nice frames with the latest pictures of the kids (their grands). This way its a gift, but not a gift. I'm sorry they are treating you this way. It is their loss, they are missing out on knowing and seeing their grandchildren grow up. They are only hurting themselves.
