It is this on that site, though...
Many DDR and all DDR2 desktops and motherboards have a built-in feature called dual channel that allows you to utilize the bandwidth of two modules at the same time. For these systems, you need to install modules in pairs for maximum performance, so if you’re going to be adding 512MB of memory, you are better off buying two 256MB modules, as opposed to one 512MB one. Again, this information is noted in the Memory Advisor tool to help you get the correct solution.

definitely 512, also, it needs to be the same ram as what you have now- if you get slower ram then ALL you ram will run at the speed of the slowest ram.
turn you machine off-ground yourself against the case- insert the ram (there is a clip lock on each end-make sure that clip lock is locked) and turn the machine back on it will recognize the extra ram automatically. the hardest part of the process is getting your hands and the stick of ram into the slot and clipped-don't be surprised if you learn a few new words doing it. but you Can do it.

First how many slots available for memory, newer pc's have 2, if your pc has 2 256's remove them both & replace with 2 512's, put the 256's for sale on ebay (might as well try to get some $$ for them)

the 512mb stick would be cheaper than the 2 256mb sticks
you said you have 512mb installed.
if that is on one stick, then when you add the second 512mb stick
that would be two installed in pairs (not to be a wiseguy)
your computer won't care if the got there together or not aas long as they match

in case you have the skill then purchase 2 1GB RAM otherwise upload 2 512MB RAM. overall performance is in basic terms approximately the comparable. the only downside in having 4 512MB RAM is theres no room for extra improve till you alter all of the modules to 1GB. once you're a gamer 2GB RAM is greater desirable than sufficient. greater useful improve your video card instead.

What ever turns your crank, personally I like to use the bigger sticks of memory so I still have a slot for further upgrades.

get the 512 x 1

that way when you add ram in the future, youd still ahve free ram slots. :)
