When in an elevator and there are other people, (one or more), with us in it... why is it that there's this nervous anxious type of mood that settles in the confines of the elevator walls?

Does it happen to you? Why does it happen?

I guess it has to do with the personal space (personal bubble). Everyone has a space that he determines who gets in and who stays away. In the elvator you stop having this choice and strangers start getting inside your space without your permission. This make people anxious. Now the way you react to this depends on your confidence and personality. Those outgoing and confident people manage well.

Aahh well, if you like social experiments in elevators do the following and you will be further surprised at the sheep like social nature of a great many of the human race.

Works best if there are two of you to start with, so enlist a friend!Take an elevator from the basement of a busy building (works best from the basement up, dont know why) Ensure you are the only two people in the elevator at the start of your ride.
Press 5 or 6 (if you press them all its too obvious) random floors including the top one (this is where you will get out)
Both of you face the back of the elevator (backs to the opening door) and emerse yourselves in conversation (best to decide on a subject beforhand so the convo seems natural and you dont fumble or laugh! :-) )
Then sit back and see how many new passangers on the elevator ALSO (after a little confusion in some cases) will follow suit and also face the back of the elevator!! Bloody funny! :-)

It is odd sometimes. I think because you are standing so close to strangers and have nothing to talk about or anything to focus your attention on. Next time start talking about something. Like for the holidays, tell everyone "Happy Kwanzaa" or something a little different. It's funny to you.

I'm not insulting people that celebrate Kwanzaa!!!

Well I think its because you are in close proximity with people you just don't know and even tho you may be smiley and say hello and be friendly and everything, you just still dont' know them and are uncomfortable with that. I think thats okay to be like that but at the same time it souldnt' control ya...I think overall its a confidence issue. The more confident you are about yourself, the less it bothers ya...

Either that or its just that no one knows who farted

Occasionally I see it in the faces of those in with there with me. Not sure why they look or feel that way. Whenever my husband and I are in one alone we attack each other with kisses. Its just a fun game we still play even after 22 years ! hee hee!

It's the fear of getting trapped with strangers in a failed elevator.

ive never really noticed, but the one time that the drunk guy pulled out a large knife and started raving about reptiles was kinda nerve racking, no one got off at any of the stops till he finally left.

It's probably because people are so close to each other that they invade personal space which makes them uncomfortable.
