here's your answer...

Cubase SX3, or any newer released cubasef software. Depending on what type of hardware you have, you might want to try Sonar 5, which is what I usually use at home in my project studio. Those two are one of the best for consumer uses. If your looking into more higher up, the best of the lines would be programs like Samplitude v8, Nuendo 3, and Pro Tools. Each of these programs (Samplitude & Nuendo 3) run in the thousands range.. Pro Tools needs proprietary hardware which starts at $10K for TDM/HD systems... The Sonar 5 studio version (it's not the highest sonar 5) is like $299 I think... The producer's version (which is top of the line for sonar) is $499. Sonar 5 is a pretty powerful program. That program would probably be better.... There's also programs like Acid Pro which probably ranges from $40-100+.... I wouldn't get him a higher end program because rappers think they always can make it (I'm a "rapper"/producer/engineer too, but I'm professional). I remember many of my friends who thought they could rap and never made it... Bands, and musicians can do it better. Honestly, I think the BEST gift to him, wouldn't be the software... He can purchase it on his own if he really wants to make it... I spent $3k on nuendo 3... The best gift to give him would be the Mixing Engineer's Handbook. It's a GREAT book to learning the ins and outs of how to mix things down & the whole production deal. It's our textbook in audio 101 (I go to MediaTech Insititute) Enjoy

Two answers. One is for fun, limited dabbler. Another is
for talent more likely to go out and deejay. The millenium serve
network promoted the general systems club Numark. All around good scratch mixers, speakers very tops, and record
services linked to some fine consoles, like crest, yamaha.
Just for the fun of basics, maybe minilab studio like crest.
Maybe maki, or Korg.
