I got him a red heat lamp to keep him nice and warm, but it is so bright! I cant believe it wont bother him at night, because I know I wouldnt get any sleep if a light was on all night. Is it true he cant see it????

I know the temperature is fine. I just want to know if the light coming from the lamp is too bright. Will it hurt his eyes and prevent him from getting sleep?

Ideally, the heat lamp heats the basking areas (to about 90F) and in-tank thermostatic water heaters heat the tank (to around 75-80F).

With a set-up like that, you'd just turn the IR heater on during the day to simulate the sun heating things up- probably on a timer.

As far as not seeing it- turtles DO see reds, but their eyelids work pretty well when they are sleeping. I would not worry about that part of it.

No i dont think it does as long as your turtle can hop off the basking platform and cool off in the water....which im sure your water temperature is around 75 degrees farenheit right?

My turtle is sleeping under his basking light as i type this message and he doesnt have a problem.

The basking temp for my turtle is at around 87. And im using a 60 watt sunglo from exo terra.

If you're having problems maintaining a healthy air temperature in its tank.....get another basking platform so he can choose if he wants to be in the shade and you'll be able to keep the basking lamp on 24/7.

Turtles can develope respiratory infection if the air temperature is too low.

Be sure to invest in a strip light that houses a bulb that can emit uv-b rays as soon as you can.

If you dont know what im talking about. google or yahoo "uv-b rays turtles metabolic bone disease"

well it kinda depends on the temp in your house & how hot the lamp is. but you could do this, get him a log to get under, make sure he has water in his water bowl, & mist the tank before you go to bed. that way you can be absolutely sure he is happy! oh & one other thing! you might want to get a thermometer & a hygromometer so you will be able to tell the temperature & the humidity in the tank. the temperature should be between 70-85 degrees. the humidity should be close to 70 degrees. i really hope this helps!

He should be fine with the red light at night as long as you have the regualr one for the daytime. It shouldn't bother him at all, especially since most reptiles sleep while basking during the day.

If you aren't sure, and I agree how can we know for sure, get him a little cave thing to hide in for night time in case he can't sleep with it.

good luck with your turtle!

NO! turn the lamp OFF. Your turtle can easily flip over on his back during the night. His delicate underside would then be severly burned, leading to possible death. You wont be there to see him and flip him over. Also, it won't let him sleep. Turn it off, just make sure the house doesn't get to cold during the night

Im sorry, yet she may well be. Its atypical that she is basically floating there. If I have been you, identity set her on the rocks so she would be in a position to respire, and wait some hours till now finding out something or doing something rational.

As long as he can get away from the light --like to the other side of the tank --I think he will be OK.
