I seem to have these little (really little) bugs flying around. I thought they were gnats but now I am not sure. They are about the size of a pin top. I believe they are in & around the houseplants.
Any ideas what they are & how to get rid of them?

I found this about those little bugs! Maybe it will help!~

I suspect they are the larval stage of either fungus gnats . They are there because you are keeping your plants too wet. The roots are beginning to rot and attracting the fungus gnats. These are the same gnats that gather around rotting fruit left on your counter.

The plants need to dry out well between waterings. Remove the drain tray and set them in the sink for the day or overnight to drain as much water as possible off.

Then set them aside and water them with a bottle of rubbing alcohol. That will kill the larva in the soil. Then do not water them again until they are dry and feel light weight if you pick them up or tip them.

They will not infect your other plants unless you are also overwatering them. Most plants need to get fairly dry before being watered. Too much water will rot the roots and cause them to be attacked by these insects.

When you repot the plants in the future add extra perlite to the pottimg soil so the soil will drain faster and you won't have the problem.

I need to know what kind of houseplants you have to give you more specific answers. Good luck.

Are your Tomatoes in the garden or house? If in the house then, fruit flies. Wash the tomatoes and cover them and all other fruits and veggies so the flies can't get on them. You can spray them with fly spray or try the suggestion below. Pour some cider vinegar into a tall drinking glass. Or, use 1/4 of wine, or some flat beer. Fruit flies are attracted to fermenting fruits and vegetables, so any sugary liquid will work. Step 2Cover the glass with a piece of plastic wrap. Use the rubber band to secure the wrap. Step 3Poke several holes into the wrap. The flies are really dumb. They will fly into the glass through the holes, but can't get back out. Step 4Put one of these traps near the infestation. I've even set one of these traps in my sink to cure a bunch of flies that were hatching inside my drain. Use more than one at a time if you need to. Step 5Pretty soon (a few hours or so), you'll have a glass full of flies. You can let them go outside, or...you can swish the liquid around in the glass and drown the suckers. I leave it to you to decide. If out side, one of these may be the problem. Whiteflies Mealybug Scale Spider Mites Thrips Leaf miner Go to a garden center if your plants or outside. They will be able to identify the pest and tell you how to get rid of them.

The bugs are fruit flies (or gnats). The best way to get rid of them is fill a coffee cup about 1/4 full of apple cider vinegar and place them close to where you see them and in a couple of days when you look inside the cups you will see they are filled with the dead flies.

If they showed up after being out of your house for awhile try this. Dump a cup of bleach down each sink, drain, etc.
