There really is no specified time limit; however, you may want to not rush the marriage. Give yourself enough time to really get to know your potential spouse. I believe you want to at least give yourself a year, so that you can not only be able to gauge how this person is reacts to all the holidays, but the seasons as well. A year also give you the opportunity to see how he or she may live and handle daily affairs and the stress of life. More importantly, you can see if true chemistry between you two really exist. Good Luck.

Anything over 1 year is too long to me. I got married within 3 months of my engagement and still had time to plan a nice wedding. But we were together for 5 before that, so I guess it would depend on how long you were in the relationship prior to the engagement.

an engagement is very dependent on your individual situation. when both of you feel confident and comfortable then it's time to move to the next stage. there are accepted norms of engagement period and you may want to conform to that or if you can resist following the crowd, you can set and plan your own timetable. after all, it is your life.

When you're engaged, a date should be agreed upon. If you're engaged with no clue of when you'll wed, it sounds like more of an advanced Going Steady with jewelry.
