How about movie tickets (why not go with her) or dinner certificates for her favorite restaurant.

How about a gift card to a spa or salon....a nice pedicure or massage is a great gift.
My sister gave my mom a homemade gift last year (she's also 55)...she made a nice coupon book on her computer with stuff like "Will clean up the Christmas decorations without complaining" or "Will comb the big, hairy dog...and NO , I don't mean Dad". I'm not sure if Mom's used them or not, but they sure did make her laugh. At 55, I think something sentimental or humerous from her kid will really make her day.

Everyone likes Red Lobster, try a gift card for there or any store that you know she frequents. Walmart gift cards are great. They have a DVD set exclusive to Walmart for "An Inconvenient Truth",
Which, was the great documentary and the highest grossing this year about Al Gore and global warming. My mother is 55 and liked it very much. Also, with gas prices, grab a gas card from somewhere. Good Luck and Merry Christmas

First thing I would do is ask her parent(s). They probably have a good idea about what the girl wants, more importantly what she needs, and most importantly, what already is cluttering their home. Before getting his nieces any gifts, my boyfriend always calls up his sister and asks what she knows they want, or what she needs. Like for christmas, one girl would like a doll house, and the 1 year old needs more pajamas. I would be asking them first especially if you even think about buying something like a barbie. A lot of parents have very strong feelings about different toys and what's appropriate. For a five years old, she's probably drags along a Webkinz everywhere, if her parents don't want another stuffed animal in the house (because there's probably about two hundred living there) I know they make webkinz clothing. Also for a five year old, opening presents is probably more fun than the actual present itself so I would suggest a few smaller presents than just one big one. That means more paper for her to tear apart.

HI!
Being almost the same age as your mom, I think a nice gift would be a coupon that you make and just write :good for one dinner out with me" and after the holidays you take her to dinner.
Merry CHristmas!

Gift cards are terrific, if you know where she like to shop that will help. I work in Steinmart and men are coming in the last 2 days just for cards.

Give her flowers and gift cards. That way if she doesn't use the gift cards she can give them to others as gifts.
