DNA is genetic material because it stores all the information needed for survival.
What makes it genetic...
1. Complementarity. Sequence of one strand dictates the sequence of the other in a double stranded DNA. This facilitates replication of DNA and hence allows passing of genetic information from one generation to the next.
2. The stabilty of DNA molecule. DNA is very stable in the conditions that prevails in the cell (nucleus). This stability is partly due to absence of OH in the 2' carbon of nucleotides.

Apart from this, there are other reasons.... Well, I guess the fact the properties that specific sequences (like promoters) confer on DNA could also be sited here.

There should be three outstanding qualities in DNA to make a genetic material. First, it must be able to replicate which means that it should be able to faithfully reproduce so that each cell receives the same material and in same sequence.
Second, it must have the information that can be transcribed and then translated into proteins serving as molecular phenotypes.
Third, it should not be immutable. In other words, DNA may occasionally be able to mutate so as to account for variation between individuals and may serve as the cause for the origin of new species.
DNA satisfies all the criteria of a genetic material.

Good question. There are several reasons. Probably one of the most important is that the bases A, C, G and T (also called nucleotides) are able to base pair with each other in only one specific way. This allows the DNA molecule to be faithfully copied from one generation to the next. The fact that there are only 4 bases (but 20 amino acids) however raise a problem, that can only be solved if nucleotide triplets code for the amino acids; 4 bases used singly only code for 4 amino acids; nucleotide duplexes could only code for 16 amino acids (4^2); but triplets allows all amino acids, plus "start" and "stop" signals.

Nature has used some language to keep the information from generation to generation. It used also the spacial arrangement of the repetitive monomers to its advantage for replication of the genetic material and translation into protein. It used also RNA (a modified DNA) to make the transition between the database and the translated product. Nature used also some tricks to start the replication, to accelerate or slow down the process and to allow some mutations for evolution/diversification of the system.

A nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the cell and is capable of self-replication and synthesis of RNA. DNA consists of two long chains of nucleotides twisted into a double helix and joined by hydrogen bonds between the complementary bases adenine and thymine or cytosine and guanine. The sequence of nucleotides determines individual hereditary characteristics.

i do no longer think of all situations of homosexuality are genetic yet i think of a few are by using fact some women people produce abnormally extreme quantities of testosterone and a few adult adult males are born with abnormally extreme quantities of estrogen and a few all people is hermaphrodites so if that's achievable then it somewhat is achievable adult adult males must be born with women people's urges and vice versa and this may be a genetic "link" to homosexuality. And there have been some comments of people who get the organ transplants from people who have been ingenious and tackle those characteristics and one lesbian women people had a coronary heart transplant from a teenage woman and now no longer wanted women people after that so it somewhat is achievable via blood transfusions too

in humans DNA is the genetic material since it carries the genetic information from ancestors but for few creatures like the HIV virus the genetic material is RNA

im a currently studying molecular biotechnology and does have a little exposure to bioinfo.....i'll take a shot at this and hopes it helps.....i tink tt wat makes DNA genetic is the fact that many research have shown that it codes many things that are hereditary...the different match ups of the pyrimidines and purines serve as informations that eventually translates for protein that makes up 'most every biological entity......for the why, im not too sure..........there need to be something to be used as a tool for transferring of hereditary materials and tt tool is DNA.......haha

Because the cell keep dividing, and the chromosomes and the DNA also divide.
