Please upgrade 1 GB RAM, also i feel that u can go for 160GB harddisk, it doesn't have any major difference in cost when compared to 80GB as well as, now u once invested will hold good for years long...
So try to consider my suggestion...
Mery christmas....

To be "the best?" Man, that's a loaded question... To answer your question fully, you would need to upgrade the processor, add as much RAM as the puppy will hold, add about four 250GB hard drives, and get a top-of-the-line video card.
Now, if you are looking for the "best" for you, it depends on what you're doing with it... If you are going to be gaming, get a good video card (spend at least 100 bucks online there and you'll be fine - 150+ if you are going to best buy or some other brick-and-mortar store). Do your homework before dropping down cash for a video card though...
You also need to bump up that RAM to 1 GB at least...
Your hard drive will be okay for the short term, but really, you need to think about 250 GB, possibly MULTIPLE 250's depending on what you'll be doing....

Hi as of today the PC to be high-end has to have dual-core either from AMD or Intel, at least 2GB of RAM and preferably 2 hard drives at least 250GB each and a video card with PCI express 512mb memory or more and not AGP. Also make sure it is dual channel RAM which is faster than having a single channel.
Right now your PC has very little RAM, 512mb ram is not optimum for windows xp nor windows vista. Windows vista recommends at least 2GB ram for aero graphics.
The important thing also is the hard drive. 80GB HDD will hold very little movies, and music. You will most likely run out of space.
Remember that movies downloaded from the internet DVD quality are like 1GB-2GB each. The operating system either windows xp or vista will take more than 1GB of your hard drive.
The thing is that some new PC games require at least 1GB of RAM and recommend 2GB or more.

Optimal? Do you have an hour to go over this?? You have a basic system... the RAM is minimal, you need to upgrade to 1 Gb, your hard drive is on the small size you download a few hundred songs and a few hundred photos and you will run out of room. I noticed that you didn't mention a video card so that tells me that your video processor is probably an integrated video chip.
You have a basic system which will do the trick for Office apps, internet browsing, email, music etc...

These are pretty good specs. The weakest link is the 512 RAM. If the computer starts feeling a little slow while playing games or mutitasking upgrade the RAM to 1024 and you will be happy again.

It's a good computer(about the same i have, until 2 days from now...)..but get a 320 or more GB SATA hard drive...get a gig at least, to be safe maybe get 2 gigs....If system is dual core, get a faster(i'm just assuming) Pentium D or whatever it is...or you could overclock (it's free, but costly if done wrong...) or both.... , but only if you have a large amount of fans....or liquid cooling....and i agree with the people who said to add a graphics card, you can get good ones on Newegg....also you can get a Xi-fi sound card from there as well....also, you should get a laser mouse if you don't have one....and get a good speaker set too...

The question to you is are you happy with what you got now? I wouldn't care what others think whats optimal or fast. 512 of RAM is great 1Gig of RAM is the best. Its up to you what you want, right?
