was wondering if acetone or nail polish remover would dissolve the putty without taking paint off walls and ceiling.

What I usually do is use a putty knife,1-2", and carefully scrape wall. When doing this be sure to not gouge walls. after this, if there is any residue left over, you can rub your finger on it and the friction will usually remove the remaing product. There are many chemicals and solvents on the market that work to varying degrees, most of them toxic to at least some degree. You should be able to remove this goop without endangering your health.

I swear via Mr. clean Magic Erasers... It gets something off, and it will paintings for that too... I even have 2 small females, believe me i know! you will in all probability have a sore arm from attaining the ceiling however!

Use Goo Gone. Removes almost anything.

try either WD40 or lighter fluid, both work.
if using lighter fluid try on a wee bit of wall to make sure paint dont come off
