It is certainly possible, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries, many American amateur astronomers did just that -- and some still do. They call themselves "ATMs" (Amateur Telescope Makers). Many ATMs grind their own mirrors out of glass blanks.
There is an convention of ATMs every year in Vermont, USA called "Stellafane."
Here are some good books and magazines about ATM:
http://www.stellafane.com/atm/atm_biblio.htm
And you can also Google "amateur telescope making" to find websites of some ATMs and their projects.

The following are very old references (30's-40's) that, therefore, use primitive equipment, but the final product is superb:
Scientific American published a three volume book set called "Amateur Telescope Making".
Allyn J. Thompson's book "Making Your Own Telescope".
John Strong's book "Procedures in Experimental Physics" has a section on telescopes mounts and mirror, as I recall.
Good luck!

You can obtain the necessary equipment to build a good telescope mirror, from several sources. However, you will still need to buy lenses, focusers, and construct some sort of mount for your homebuilt. Many amateurs have built their own telescopes, so it is not at all unusual, if you have the patience and facilities. Try typing something like 'telescope making kits' into your browser.

refer to sky and telescope or astronomy magazine. there are many ways of making a telescope, but you need to have some mechanical ability. i've read up on doing it, but i'm not that mechanically inclined to do so. you have to know your limits!
