Also, physics and chemistry majors.
I know the fields in science are extremely competitive, however I've never really had the "real world" explained to me (which may be a bitter reality after all this work).

Please help!

Most Physics, Philosophy and Chemistry majors that I know, work for IT companies, or involved in Real Estate or pharmaceutical sales. They make pretty good money too. (Physics and Chemistry majors work as lab managers if they are lucky) . I also have a friend Philosophy major is a successful stock broker, and others are attending law school or medical school. I'm sure there are more job opportunities out there for you than sales, Real Estate or IT, as the current economy places value on workers who have technical, financial or scientific educational backgrounds), but the best job opportunities will more than likely require a Master's or PHD. However, if you can sale yourself and your liberal arts/scientific background to employers and you'll be surprised by how far you can get.

chemistry majors do REALLY well in biochemical engineering, (which is still in the sciences), and they average about 52,000 a year. This of course requires a master's degree. That's what I'm doing. But first, I'm working on a bachelors in clinical laboratory science.

As far as philosophy majors...hmm, most I know have Ph.D's and teach.

Philosophy majors are taught to think critically, write well and express themselves clearly. They can do almost anything.
