The correct answer in nobody. When the Yankees get put out, baseball is hurt and therefore MLB cancels the WS and just goes through the motions to finish the playoffs. I believe the following 11 years have gone this way.
2006 - nobody
2005 - nobody
2004 - Did not happen
2003 - Yankees lost
2002 - nobody
2001 - Yankees lost
2000 - New York Yankees
1999 - New York Yankees
1998 - New York Yankees
1997 - nobody
1996 - New York Yankees

St Louis Cardinals over Detroit Tigers in 5 games. The WS MVP was David Eckstein, who hit .364 for the Series, with 4 ribbies. Tony La Russa, the Cardinals manager became the second manager in history to win a World Series in both leagues (he previously won the 1989 Series with the A's). This Series also saw two rookies start game one, a World Series first.

Yes, unfortunately the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers. It lasted five games, the Tigers only winning Game 2. I really thought the Tigers would do better against them, but the Cards had to much experience riding in their favor I guess. Hopefully the Tigers will have another successful season next year. I just can't cheer on the Cards because they're in the same division as the Reds.
